Reiki – Explained

THE MEANING OF REIKI

REI-KI (pronounced Ray-Key) Rei means universal and Ki meaning life force energy, so put together Reiki means Universal Life Force Energy.

Let me start by giving you the dictionary definition of Reiki:

‘A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being’

WHERE DID REIKI COME FROM?

Healing in one form or another has been about since the beginning of time but the form known as Reiki was adapted and developed by Mikao Usui.

Mikao was born in 1865 into a wealthy family in the village of Taniai-mura, Japan. As a child Mikao studied in a Tendai Buddhist monastery and later became interested in medicine, psychology and the theology of religions around the world. Throughout his life he was able to travel the world and gain inspiration from many cultures.

In 1922 he opened his first school/clinic in Harajuku Tokyo. His skills as a healer and teacher were such that his fame spread quickly throughout Japan and now the world.

In healing when we talk about energy, we are referring to a natural life force energy, which is something that flows through all living things. In China it is known as Chi, in Japan Ki, in India it is called Prana. When I was studying Homoeopathy we called it Universal Life Force. When this energy is out of balance disease is the result. If our life force energy gets blocked on any level we experience symptoms of either a physical, emotional or mental level.

MY OWN DESCRIPTION OF HOW REIKI WORKS

The way I often describe this kind of energy is to liken it to a fast flowing stream, the stream flows the path of least resistance. If a large stone is placed in the stream the water must flow around the blockage, now imagine another stone is placed in the way, eventually the stream will become blocked and the water will become stagnant. If you now look at energy, rather than a stream, when energy becomes blocked and stagnant symptoms will develop. This is where Reiki can be of service in finding the blockages and helping to free the flow of energy again.

Reiki is a ‘hands on’ healing and is carried out in a quiet environment, the person being treated is fully clothed, apart from shoes. The practitioner places their hands, non-invasively on the body in a series of positions, directing the energy to where it is needed most.

WHAT CAN REIKI DO FOR YOU?

Above I gave you the dictionary definition of Reiki but in actual terms it can help with the following:

  • Reiki can increase energy levels, so can help conditions such as Chronic Fatigue
  • Promote the feeling of calmness and balance
  • Reduce tension and anxiety, so helpful in Panic Attacks
  • Eases insomnia
  • Helps to relieve headaches
  • Can be beneficial in general aches and pains

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM REIKI?

Reiki is suitable for people of all ages. It will not interfere with other treatments and compliments conventional and other natural therapies.

No matter what the condition, the general effect of Reiki treatments is to make the person feel more calm and relaxed. It eases stress and raises energy levels.

I have found on many occasions people have told me after a session of Reiki that not only have physical problems felt easier but emotions have surfaced and been dealt with.

As I mentioned before, Reiki can help energy to flow freely, so blockages to health on a physical, emotional or mental level can be eased.

Why not book a session of Reiki and see what it can do for you.
